Not a great way of going about canceling the Iran deal. He should just present it to the Senate for ratification as a treaty, and when it fails, announce that from the point of view of the United States, it was never legally anything.

I really don't get why they make these games so difficult to watch on TV. Tomorrow's ALDS game is being broadcast only on MLB Network, and requires authentication through some cable provider even though normally you can just subscribe online without a cable provider.

Baseball just isn't designed to be decided by one single game. Even a 7-game series is pretty random. I think a 7-game series of baseball is probably no better than a single game of football in determining the better team, in that a significantly better football team will win a single game match more than a significantly better baseball team will win the 7-game series.

Yeah, Game 163 breaks a regular season tie. The Wild Card Game is the equivalent of making the top 2 teams in a division play a one-game playoff to decide the division, every year, even when one team won way more in the regular season.

I can't really discern a purpose for it other than to generate more ad revenue with an extra playoff game, and to punish the Wild Card winner. People didn't like the percentage of World Series won by WC teams or something. But that's because the WC winner under the old system was usually the 2nd or 3rd best team in the league, by regular season record. And given that they probably played in a strong division, in terms of team quality, maybe even better than the regular season record indicates. So it shouldn't be surprising they win the WS a fair number of times.

For people who care so much about divisions, how about this?

The team with the best record in the league gets a bye straight through to the LCS. There are no wild card teams. Like how for most of baseball's history the team with the best record in the league simply won the league and moved straight to the World Series. This would properly reward teams that win in the regular season.

Well you shouldn't be gunning for winning the Wild Card race. It was made to incentive winning the division, and if you don't win the division, you shouldn't get an immediate reward.

It also makes things way more fun.

It takes away the consequences of not winning a division though - you get WC2 instead of being out of the postseason. And it utterly ruins Game 163, which used to be the most exciting part of a division race. If horrible stuff happens and the Yankees and Red Sox end up tied, what do they do for the division tiebreaker? Go for the win or save their best pitcher for the WC game against the Twins if they should lose? The answer is probably go for the win, but then, one of the teams has to lose, and they'll be at a disadvantage against the Twins who have probably not been in a competitive race and can rest players for days.

The Gimmick Game/Wild-Card Game was a horrible horrible idea. Ruins division races and the wild card race at one blow, since the loser of a division race will likely at least qualify for WC #2, and there's no real advantage to winning the wild card race.

It is hard to make the one time bonus credible as a one time event. After this, companies will stash money overseas again, waiting for the next amnesty.

I'm not sure there's a way to make it credible.....Congress cannot do anything to bar a future Congress from doing what it wants.

Less. Nothing built Trump's credibility as an outsider more than his willingness to go after respected politicians.

History has always been extremely unrepresentative of most people at any given time or place, because most people do not do things that are important enough to their world to become part of history. Even kings with tremendous impact can be lost to history if their successor hates them and tries to erase them from the records.

Example: Rome beat Carthage at war, and, as a result, lasted 600+ years longer and became a much bigger and more powerful empire, and had a much bigger impact on the world. As a result, much more history has been written about Rome than Carthage. Is that fair? Is that wrong?

Attacking North Korea just seems like such a bad idea. At that point, Un has nothing to lose by going even further batshit insane.

If NK attacks us first, it's different. But they won't. They'll posture and pose and do whatever they can for the cameras. But if we attack NK first? That gives China all the reason to go full in with North Korea.

Wonder how many thought the same about Hitler.

North Korea is fenced in, unlike Germany. It only borders South Korea, China, and Russia, none of which it can attack without causing a war that ends with the end of North Korea as a country. There's no Austria or Czechoslovakia or Poland analog here.

Also, the United States was firmly standing on not intervening in the 30s and Germany had already demonstrated once that it was militarily superior to Britain and France together, in WWI, in Spring 1918. This was demostrated again in 1940. By contrast, it's very clear right now who would win a US/NK war.

Speaking of which, one of the GOP's ideas for "tax reform" is apparently getting rid of the deduction for state/local income tax (which would again really fuck over people in most blue states). Similar incentives will be in play there for blue state GOP Reps.

It's a nice incentive for blue states to get rid of their own income taxes. As long as the sales tax deduction is also abolished (since sales tax is worse than income tax).

I guess they could just enshrine DACA into law. It would be creating a new official class of permanent noncitizens. Incidentally, there's nothing that stops states from granting the right to vote to noncitizens who live there. But if blue states did it, it wouldn't really impact the federal government, as representation in the electoral college and Congress would stay the same, notwithstanding the new voters in blue states.

The comments section on Yahoo news is against dreamers, to a surprising degree. I feel like it's very difficult to do this in a way that can work, politically, for Republicans. They need a way to get credit for it so the new citizens don't become more votes for Democrats.

The universal healthcare is actually easier, I think. Trump appears with Bernie at a press conference and announces that he's been working with Bernie on his grand plan to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something that provides affordable healthcare for everyone, and it's finally ready. I think Congress will buckle under once they see the polls.
